Officials have not yet released body camera footage of the most recent shooting, which occurred Tuesday afternoon, but residents of the southwest Baltimore neighborhood expressed outrage over what they called an unnecessary loss of life. The man, later identified as Hunter Jessup, started running and allegedly pointed a gun at police during the ensuing chase. The group said DAT officers treat them with disdain and routinely initiate negative interactions. Police leaders often commend officers for getting illegal firearms off the streets, and Baltimore gun violence overall has been trending downward in recent months. Daniel Webster, a professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Gun Violence Solutions in Baltimore, said the success of specialized gun units often hinges on a focused approach.

Historically, political realignment has occurred when groups of voters change their affiliation to a new political party or candidate, especially around presidential and midterm elections. Yet the period between 1852 and 1860 is crucial here, for it saw the last time a major political party collapsed (the Whig Party in 1854) and the dissolution of another political party (the Democratic Party in 1860). The 1924 Democratic Party famously went through 103 ballots before agreeing on a compromise candidate, John W. Davis of West Virginia. Of course, party realignment is a tricky thing since we only come to know that it has happened in hindsight. A failure to reach a majority consensus signals the doom of an American political party.

Nine Florida lawmakers will join Trump at the Iowa State Fair. This is just the latest way Trump has found to needle the Florida governor. The Iowa State Fair is a major event for presidential hopefuls, who often flip pork chops and gawk at the butter cow alongside Iowans and throngs of journalists. Trump previously raised eyebrows at 2015 State Fair when he offered children free helicopter rides. A representatives for DeSantis' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

He likely has encouraged future insurrections by vowing to pardon the rioters who sacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. During Tyler’s presidency, the Whigs actually expelled him from the party when he violated Whig principles. Tyler, like Trump, was a somewhat unexpected president who didn’t originally belong to the party that elected him. But Harrison died one month after his inauguration, making Tyler the first vice president to succeed to the presidency. Like Trump, Tyler had little respect for the party establishment that put him in power.
